What this covers

We replace worn or damaged door locks on homes and businesses across Mid-Missouri. That can mean taking out a loose knob set, a sticky deadbolt, or a cylinder that no longer turns cleanly. We fit new rim, mortise, or bored cylindrical parts to the door, then set the key side and latch side to match the opening. If the key is chipped, bent, or missing, we can also change the cylinder instead of the whole body.

How the work goes

Each job starts with the existing screws, the faceplate, and the way the key enters the cylinder. A front door with a simple knob set asks for different parts than a storefront door with a mortise case. We look at the old cutout, the spacing of the trim, and the hole pattern before removing anything. Then we fit the new lock so the key turns, the latch catches, and the door closes against the strike.

Where it stops

We do not cut a new keyway or machine the door for a larger case. If the opening needs milling or other cabinet work, that is outside this service.

Before you call about lock replacement

You may ask whether we need to replace the whole body or only the part with the key slot. We look at the face of the door, the latch, and the cylinder before we answer. On a bored cylindrical set, we can swap the cylinder and keep the latch case if that is the right fit. On a rim or mortise lock, we remove the old cylinder, tailpiece, or trim ring, then fit the new parts in their place. The old key pattern is not reused unless the new cylinder matches it.

You may ask if the new key will work with the inside thumb turn and the outside keyway. We check the spindle, the collar, and the screw holes so the parts line up in the door. If the thumb turn is worn, we replace that piece too. If the faceplate is bent or the latch is loose in its slot, we replace the worn parts in the lock body. For a business door, we may fit a different cylinder so one key works the chosen doors, while the old key stays with the removed cylinder.

You may ask what happens to the old lock parts after we take them out. We remove the outside cylinder, the inside trim, the screws, and the latch assembly where needed. Then we set the new pieces into the same openings and check the keyway, the bolt throw, and the thumb turn. If the door has a mortise case, we fit the new cylinder into that case. If it has a rim lock, we secure the new housing on the inside face of the door, with the key slot centered and the latch sitting square.

How do I know if my door lock needs replacement instead of just a new key?

A worn keyway, a loose outside knob, or a key that turns only partway can point to a lock that needs replacement. We look at the key slot, the latch throw, and the face of the cylinder for wear. If the key catches, wobbles, or leaves the bolt feeling rough, the old parts may be past a simple key issue.

Which part wears out first on a lock replacement, and how can I tell?

The key cylinder usually wears first, especially the part the key slides through and turns. You may feel extra play in the key, a scrape as it turns, or a spot where it hangs up. The outside trim can look fine while the inside parts are still worn, so we check the key, cylinder, and bolt together.

Can you replace just the cylinder, or does the whole door lock have to come out?

Sometimes just the cylinder comes out, and sometimes the whole lock needs to be removed. We match the repair to the rim lock, mortise lock, or bored cylindrical lock on the door. If the keyway is the only worn part, a cylinder swap may fit the job. If the bolt case or trim is damaged, full replacement may be the better path.

What should I have ready before you replace the lock on my house or business door?

The old key, if you have it, helps us compare the cuts and see how far the cylinder has worn. We also look at the thumbturn, the outside key slot, and the latch movement in the door. If the key is missing or bent, we can still remove the old lock and fit a new one to the same opening.
