If you want the existing key changed out on a home door, we rekey the lock and cut new keys for it. You keep the same deadbolt or knob on the door, but the old key no longer matches the inside parts. How the work goes
We start with the keyway and the key you have now, then we match the cylinder to a new key pattern. Some jobs use a simple knob on a bedroom or side entry, while others involve a deadbolt above it or a mortise case in an older door. The small parts inside the lock decide what changes are needed. We set up the rekey around that door, then make new keys for the lock, so the key cut fits the cylinder on that door.

After rekeying, the new key deserves a clean pocket and a straight bend. A key that rides with coins, screws, or a ring full of sharp edges can pick up grit and twist at the cut tips. We smooth the fresh cuts and check the bow for flex before you start using it. If the key starts to drag, we look at the teeth first. A worn key can scrape the plug and leave brass dust in the keyway and on the cylinder face.
A light wipe on the blade matters when you use the key at a sticky front knob or a stiff deadbolt. Dust from a purse, work pants, or a dashboard can build on the cuts and rub into the slot. We clean the key and clear the face of the keyway so the edge does not carry grit back in. If the key shows a burr, we dress that edge before it catches in the slot again. A bent blade can press the plug at an angle and wear the inside of the cylinder.
The key ring should stay simple. A heavy ring can tug on the key while it hangs in the knob or the deadbolt, and that extra pull can wear the cut edge and the plug. We check the key for fresh grooves, then we match the cuts to the new pins and test the turn with a smooth hand. If the key starts to feel rough, we look at the shoulder and the bow, not just the face of the lock, because a nick there can mark the slot and the cylinder face again.

Will my old keys still open the locks after you rekey them?
No, your old keys will no longer open those locks. We change the inside parts that match the key cuts, then make new keys for the changed locks. We may ask you to test each key in each door, so you can see which key belongs to which lock on the ring.
Can you rekey the door locks on my house, and do I get new keys?
